Edwalton Extension

Home Case Studies Edwalton Extension

The Customer

A Semi retired couple decided to extend the kitchen area on their detached 1920’s home in Edwalton. The aim was to create a bright and modern space, that also enabled better access and views to the scenic garden that they had created.

The Challenge

The client required a rear, flat roof extension to create an open plan kitchen. It was essential that the space would allow a significant amount of natural light in, utilising the fact it was a south facing garden. The extension was to be functional and overall improve the ease of day-to-day life for the couple.

Special Features

  • Self-cleaning skylight
  • Two large patio doors
  • Full length window

The Solution

Using insights from property surveys and analysing how the property was being used, layout plans were devised that would meet the requirements of the client.

Two large patio doors were centred on the south face of the extension. This provided easy access and a wonderful view of the garden. A self-cleaning glass skylight was installed on the fibre glassed flat roof, to provide light to the rear of the extension, where it met the original building. A full-length window was also installed on the west elevation. The internal floor was raised to meet the existing floor, and steps were formed on the exterior of the extension. The roof was seamlessly tied into a vaulted roof on the existing building. The brickwork matched the existing build perfectly, with particular attention to detail being shown around the openings, matching those on the rest of the property.

The internal layout was reconfigured to allow space for a new utility room, without compromising the open feel to the kitchen. A new 3 metre extension spanning the full width of the house was added to the property which allowed for the open plan kitchen diner to be added. By using reclaimed bricks, a seamless finish between the new and old elements of the house was possible. This helped to connect the existing and the old spaces together, both from the inside and outside perspective.
